Describe your firm in your own words and the types of clients that you typically work with:
I’m a solo advisor with 12 years of wealth management experience. Most of that time I was spent working with HNW and UHNW families at Morgan Stanley where I was a portfolio manager. I intend to remain a small, if not solo, firm long-term. I believe strongly in partnering with experts to serve my clients, so I’m a fan of the MFC business model as well. I provide financial planning services on a one-time and ongoing basis, as well as investment management services on an ongoing basis. My clients are typically early in their careers with an average income of $200,000 per year and about $1M-$2M in net worth. Most of my clients use my planning services, I make investment recommendations, and they go implement the investment plan on their own. They’re often attracted to my flat fee option to begin with. But when a busy couple simply needs to outsource tasks or they find the prospect of managing investments too overwhelming, I am happy manage the investments for them.
How are you compensated for your work? List your compensation methods out in detail:
Typically I charge a minimum annual planning fee of $4800. If I also manage investments for the client, $1M of AUM is included in the flat annual fee. I charge .48% of AUM in excess of $1M. I cap my total annual fee at $24,000. I coach my clients that as their net worth increases above $1M we will increasingly need to use other professional services (primarily CPA and attorney). In order to provide investment management services to MFC clients, who already have financial planning services covered, I would offer my .48% AUM fee to MFC clients, without the required minimum. I will still cap my maximum annual fee per client at $24,000.
What is the one standout detail about your firm that clients find with your firm that they have not found elsewhere?:
I’m adamant about including partners and spouses on all client communications (if the client agreement is with both partners). If I have a phone call with one client, their partner is automatically included on the meeting recap email. I actually have this set up as an automation. It will be easy to include a MFC planner in this system as well.
