“Have you been in a previous lawsuit with a client? If so please describe the lawsuit in detail.” – Yes. Something like 10 – 15 years ago 2 times.

  1. Client lost a trial based on judicial error. Completely overturned on appeal. After winning, client sued my firm for legal fees and got his ass handed to him so badly that the law firm representing him then went out of business. $0 settlement.
  2. The 2nd was a group of members of an LLC that never was able to make a profit. The members sued one another. None of them had money, so after suing one another, one member then sued me as the lawyer that formed the LLC. My insurance company insisted on settling for such a small amount that I did not even trigger my deductible.

What is the one standout detail about your firm that clients find with your firm that they have not found elsewhere?:
We are one of the few pure Estate Planning and closely held business law firms in the greater Houston area. Very few lawyers are Board Certified, and even fewer are Board Certified with a Master of Laws in Taxation. I have 4 lawyers at my firm, which makes us one of the larger Estate Planning practices.

 

 

Jay Knighton

Jay Knighton is Board Certified in Estate Planning and Probate by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Jay prepares wills and trusts, handles the firm’s probate matters, and works closely with families to create estate plans that fit their needs. He advises clients with regard to business planning and acquisitions to protect assets, minimize income taxes, and estate taxes. Jay also handles all tax matters with the IRS.

Jay is a frequent speaker at continuing education seminars for professional individuals on the topics of estate planning, probate, trusts and business planning. His most recent seminars topics are “What Every Business Person Should Know about the Law,” “The Fundamentals of Estate Planning,” “Life Insurance: The Lynchpin of Estate and Business Planning,” “Business Planning: Incubation to Termination,” and “Advanced Estate Planning.”

A native of Corinth, Mississippi, Jay joined the firm in February 2004. He earned his Bachelor of Accountancy in 1998 from The University of Mississippi. As one of the top 24 graduating students, he was awarded a Marcus Elvis Taylor Medal. In 2001, he earned his law degree (Juris Doctorate) from Tulane University School of Law. In 2002, he earned a Masters of Laws in Taxation (LL.M. in Taxation) from The University of Florida, one of the top tax programs in the country.

In the greater Houston area community, Jay served as one of the Directors of the South Montgomery County Woodlands Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Outlook Conference Committee, and as team leader of the advisory council for the Young Professional Association. He also served a three year period as the President of the University of Mississippi (Houston) Alumni Association, which has an active membership of over 3,000 alumni in the Houston area. Presently he is active in The Rotary Club of the Woodlands.
